The review

A Great Classic

read by Jonas Himmelstrand

The Courage to Create

Psychologist Rollo May (1909–1994) has written several classics on psychology and philosophy. The Courage to Create from 1975 is maybe his book with the greatest importance today. To dare to meet the unknown, to dare to create something new, to expand one’s comfort zone has become the reality for many people today. Probably for many more people than the author could anticipate.

In this book Rollo May describes the psychology and philosophy of courage and creativity. He shows that creativity is necessary to keep one’s authenticity. We can handle the anxiety of a changing world by daring to think new thoughts and having the courage to create.

Courage is a core value which sustains all other personal values such as honesty, respect and love, according to the author. Without courage our personal values fade, according to Rollo May.

The courage to create is about listening to your own being, as the author puts it, and to dare to contribute to the world according to one’s convictions.

In Strategies we often write about the concept of the comfort zone. Rollo May’s book can be seen as a basic textbook on expanding your comfort zone.

During the transition between a – for most people – relatively uncreative industrial society and a much more challenging knowledge society, the courage to create is a highly valuable talent, not least in the business world.

With the area of learning & growing The Courage to Create must be said to be a classic of classics. This book will give readers of Strategies many insights. Highly recommended!
